A Travellerspoint blog

Wednesday - September 12th

sunny 60 °F

To finish up Tuesday......

After Jackie's incredible hike from Monterosso to Vernazza and her return by boat, we had a great pizza dinner at a pizzeria near our hotel. We struck up a conversation with the girl seated next to us who was a pharmacist from New Zealand traveling alone for one month in Europe. The stories of her travels, both past and present, were fascinating. It just so happened she was staying at our hotel so we asked if she would like to join us for our last gelato and stroll in Italy. It was a very nice evening.

For the first time on our trip, we were awakened at 5:30 am by the alarm. It was a HORRIBLE experience... but we did have to catch a 6:50 am train back to Zug. We traveled up the coast to Genoa and then headed away from the coast north to Milan where we changed trains to Zug.

As we crossed the border from Italy into Switzerland, you could slowly see the landscape change into the incredible greens from the tree tops to the grassy hillsides and the beautiful waterfalls. It started to rain for a while but everything was still lush and vibrant. The train ride was uneventful and we arrived in Zug, caught the bus and returned to our home base at the Tobins. It did take us about 8 hours of travel so after quick showers we had a the great treat of going out to dinner with the Tobin girls.

Jackie and I joined Lisa, Anna, Emma and Kelly for a delicious dinner at the Baurenhof. We all enjoyed Swiss cuisine and the conversations were spectacular. Each one of the girls have their own unique personalities so you can imagine the variety of topics that were discussed. All I can say is "What happens at the Baurenhof....stays at the Baurenhof!" Both Jackie and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening!

Thursday - September 13th

Our last official day of our marvelous trip. So we woke up to a beautiful day with sunshine and some blue skies. Of course it was cool, temperature wise, I would say from our morning yesterday in Italy to our morning today in Switzerland showed about a 30-40 degree difference. I was delighted, Jackie was not.

We ventured down the hill into the Old Town of Zug and found this charming shop that had every sort of item made in Switzerland. Spent a lot of time wandering in there without complaint. Jackie went to the police station to get the keys to climb up the old clock tower while I wandered the streets of the Old Town. Very quaint and beautiful. Then we walked down to Lake Zug and there was a beautiful aviary with many different species of South American Ibis, white owls, beautiful pheasants, etc. Did some more shopping in the town and stopped into a local eatery for some soup, hot chocolate and cappucino. Returned to home base and Jackie went for a hike up the hillside by the Tobin's home. She just got back and said she was with the cows and the sheep and that the views were spectacular! As far as Jackie is concerned, this city was her most favorite. She loved the views and the lush hillsides, and since she has opted not to write in this blog, I'm sure I am omitting many of her thoughts and feelings. So that's MY disclaimer.

Having a home-cooked meal with all of the women, packing up and then the plan is tomorrow we'll take the train to the Zurich airport to fly home.

Final update tomorrow. Slowly loading pictures so please bear with me. Taking a lot of time.
